Matthew Dear “Don And Sherri”
“Zero” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Looks like Im going to be seeing them with the LCD Soundsystem Crew, Zola Jesus, HEALTH, Squarepusher, Antlers, etc at the Creators Project in San Francisco Saturday!
“Commotion” by The Hundred In The Hands. So hoping to get to see these guys with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Zola Jesus, Squarepusher, the Antlers, Health and others at this crazy avant garde multi media event coming to San Francisco soon. http://www.thecreatorsproject.com/
Wow, wasn’t expecting this. A theatrical documentary about LCD Soundsystem called “Shut Up And Play The Hits”, probably my all time favorite of the modern “indie” wave. Again, so glad I was able to see them before they disbanded…though, I’m not sure they really achieved commercial success which may be kind of a good thing.
Call me a cliche, but of the last 5 years as far as “indie rock” or music in general, this is my favorite song by one of my favorite all time favorite artists. “North American Scum” by LCD Soundsystem, and I am so glad I got to see them before they disbanded. I don’t know if it’s the Talking Heads/late 70’s New York dance punk vibe, or the don’t-give-a-shit wardrobe or the random stream of conscious observational lyrics…but I dig it man. I dig it lots. And I always get excited whenever I hear the dooooooooo…..dooo doo doo do dooooooo opening analog synthline at the indie dance clubs. Wahhhhoooooooooo, NORTH AMERICAN SCUMMMMM! (I went on to spoof LCD Soundsystem and James Murphy in an animated episode here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmvNkUUFHRc )
“Balloons” by Foals. I often distinguish what kind of “indie” rock I like compared to what people normally think of. Yes I absolutely love MGMT, LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire, Two Door Cinema Club, The Horrors, Vampire Weekend, etc. But these days, people’s idea of “indie rock” is bland snoozefest “alt folk” stuff and blandrock that seems to headline a lot of hipster music fests. I need tight hooks, jangly guitars, and overall CATCHYNESS. That’s why a lot of the “indie” stuff I usually go for is really eclectic synth heavy stuff, as I just can’t get into NPR alt folk rock. But then there is Foals, who are by far my absolute favorite of the modern ‘indie rock’ bands. I don’t know what it is about them, but virtually every song by them delights me to no end. “Olympic Airwaves”, “Cassius”, “Red Socks Pugie”…if I dj’s a hipster dance night I’d be spinning that stuff right along with Yeah Yeah Yeahs and classic Blur.
(Clip from “Attack of the Beards”, the second Badical Power episode which will be up this Friday) It’s the event you’ve been waiting all year for! All your favorite “indie” bands(that you can’t go anywhere without hearing) and 80,000 thrift storian cool kids together in one event…it’s HIPSTERFEST 2011! Also check out the official Badical Power Facebook page!
PRESS PLAY PAUSE(2011, documentary) If you haven’t seen this, go do eeeet now! It’s an absolutely visionary new documentary film the filmmakers have put online for free. Pretty much it explores how technology has afforded everyone to be a filmmaker, artist, musician, etc and have their work seen instantly instead of going through traditional channels(As well as exploring the pros and cons that go with that new paradigm) Has some of the most absolutely stunning cinematography I’ve seen in a documentary since Koyaanisqatsi.
